Ever since I switched over to a less art-focused outlook on life (tech support), I really haven't had a reason to come back here.

I used Flash up until a bit ago. The Shadow Soul picture was my first attempt at using Illustrator instead.
Ah, I use Flash myself. That Shadow Soul one is really good; clearly you've transitioned well. 
What prompted you to make the switch?
I guess exporting to proper SVGs. There are also some better line tools and filters/effects.
The thing I'll miss the most about Flash is easily filling in a set of lines.
